Tara’s Style Guide to Pants + October Finds
Styling for me is so intuitive and personal, and such a perfect combination of art and science, that sometimes it’s hard to put it down on paper.
This month, in an effort to get out of our ‘Zoom top + athleisure bottom’ outfits, our team challenged me to find pants that are more or less universally flattering, that can be worn with a nice top, and that are still super comfy. Below are a few of my favorites.
But first, they asked me for some guidelines when choosing a new pair of pants:
Team: With many dressing rooms closed in retail stores, how do I eyeball a pair of pants and know that they will fit? Or, do I need to go home with a few sizes?
Tara: Stores are being very understanding right now with their return policies so bring home a few pairs of pants and try them on. Since we are limited in our interactions these days, try and stay away from pants that need altering. If you’re on the shorter side opt for a pair of cropped pants as they usually fit perfectly and don’t need any alterations.
Team: What is the most important thing to think about when it comes to fit? Length? Waist?
Tara: When it comes to stretchy jeans always remember to size down. Stretchy jeans stretch (right?) and they will continue to do so with time. You want to start the day with your denim on the tighter side as they will loosen throughout the day. Stay away from pants that fit snugly around the thigh / butt area. Too much pull will make you feel uncomfortable especially if you’re sitting all day on Zoom calls. Opt for jogger pants (as pictured above) - they feel like a sweatpants but are chic enough to be dressed up or down!
Team: Are belts a thing this season? Any guidelines for choosing a great belt?
Tara: Belts are VERY big this season! A good belt can elevate your style in a minute. I love a skinny belt with a pair of jeans and a thicker belt when wearing a dress or wrapped around a blazer. I think it’s fun to have a little embellishment on the buckle - whether it’s a brand’s logo or something that represents you (initial, anchor, etc).
Team: What are your favorite pants that tend to be universally flattering?
Tara: There are a few pants and brands that I’ve found work for almost all my clients. These designers have at least one or two designs that look good on most body types.
Tara’s Pants Picks
Gucci Stretch Crepe Flared Pant - this easy-to-wear pant also comes in a longer leg and is one of my top picks. It fits like a glove and although a bit on the pricier side, I promise you will wear them ALL of the time!
Derek Lam 10 Crosby - If you're looking for a step up from denim check out Derek Lam 10 Crosby! I guarantee that you will find a fit that works for you. Every season they add a bit of embellished details that add pop of fun to your everyday dressing. One of our team’s favorites is the Robertson Cropped style.
Mother Denim - I have to admit that initially I was afraid of the name! But, I have to tell you that I looooove these jeans! They are soft like butter and they definitely have a style to fit everyone. Bloomingdales has a large selection of Mother denim and they are a huge favorite of my clients because they almost define ‘effortless cool’.
Joggers!!! You’re probably thinking “there is no way I can get away with a jogger pant”, right? I’m here to tell you that YES YOU CAN! Treat this style like a sweatpant that just got a major promotion. Style it with a T-shirt, sneaker, and a blazer. This WFH outfit is ideal because you can take a break from Zooming to run around with the kids / dog / fill-in-the-blank or throw on a pair of heels or a bootie to grab a socially distanced drink with a friend. We love this pair from Rebecca Taylor.
Sweatpants - I know we are all sick of our sweatpants at this point but they are SO comfortable. Let’s elevate the sweatpant look! Just add a blazer, a denim jacket, a military coat or a Moto jacket with a T-shirt, a cool pair of sneakers and a crossbody bag - one word CHIC. We are loving these Align Joggers from Lululemon because they are comfy but still manage to look sleek - as far as sweats go!
