The Maximalism Trend

What Are We Wearing?

Maximalism fashion is everywhere right now, from runway shows to street style, defined by bold prints, vibrant colors, rich textures, and dramatic silhouettes. As a stylist, I love this return to expressive dressing because it allows personality to shine through. Below, I’m sharing three distinct ways to style maximalist-inspired outfits and insider tips to make each look feel confident and chic rather than costume-y.

Look 1: The Bold Print Midi Dress
A printed midi dress is the most effortless entry point into maximalism. Think oversized florals, artistic brush strokes, or mixed prints in contrasting colors. Style a flowing, bold midi dress with chunky platform boots, stacked bangles, a cropped, cozy faux fur and finish with a unique shoulder bag for a Bohemian take on maximalism and perfect for the fall weather.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Balance volume with structure. If your dress has exaggerated sleeves or a flared skirt, cinch the waist with a sleek belt and keep accessories clean so the print remains the hero.

Look 2: Formal with Denim
Maximalism thrives on dimension. Layering contrasting elements is an easy way to play with texture and color while keeping the foundation of your outfit simple. A wide-leg, high-rise denim styled with a ruffled blouse and sleek tuxedo blazer is the epitome of maximalist style with an effortless undertone. Finish with a patent leather sky high heel and classic black and gold leather shoulder bag for a classic finish.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Keep the color palette cohesive or go monochromatic. Stick to two or three main tones to avoid visual overload this way your look is dramatic but intentional.

Look 3: Textures That Elevate
Maximalism is about a lot of different details that work together. Pairing contrasting prints can seem intimidating but it doesn't have to be. Style a textured plaid trouser with sharp tailoring with a silk, muted print camisole that feels delicate and neutral. Finish with a fitted leather blazer to pull the look together and go with a color that is the main color of either the pants OR the top for a chic, luxurious, very worldly take.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Pair separates with grounded accessories that complement your look. Try a bag that is the same color family as the jacket or pants to pull the look together.
