Trench Coats: Short or Long, The Must-Have Layer for Fall

What Are We Wearing?

Few pieces stand the test of time like a trench coat. Equal parts practical and polished, the trench coat has evolved far beyond its utilitarian roots, becoming a seasonal staple that feels both timeless and on-trend.

This fall, the trench is all about playing with length, cropped and playful or sweeping and dramatic, here’s how I’m styling trench coats this season.

1. The Short Trench

A cropped trench coat hits at the waist or just above the hips, giving a fresh, playful twist on the classic. I love pairing it with high-waisted jeans, a casual but luxurious chunky or super fine and elegant knit sweater, and ballet flats for that effortless Parisian energy. The shorter length highlights your natural waistline and works beautifully for petite frames or anyone who wants to balance proportions.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Choose a cropped trench in a lighter shade like sand or cream for a pop or go dark and sultry with burgundy or navy for a more formal feel.

2. The Classic Mid-Length

The mid-length trench (hitting just above the knee) is the wardrobe workhorse. Throw it over a pencil skirt and blouse for the office, or style it casually with wide-leg trousers and loafers for everyday polish. It’s versatile, professional, and transitional, making it the perfect piece for those in-between weather days.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Cinch the waist belt in a knot rather than a bow for a more relaxed, editorial look.

3. The Longline Trench

A floor-sweeping trench instantly elevates even the simplest outfit. Picture a deep khaki, chestnut brown, or black trench coat layered over a slim turtleneck dress with knee-high boots. The extra length creates movement and drama, almost like wearing a gown but with all the practicality of outerwear.

Tara’s Style Edit:

Let the trench stay open to show off your outfit underneath, the movement of the coat is part of the look!
