How To Style The "Horseshoe" Jean

What Are We Wearing?

Everyone knows I love wide-leg denim, but the barrel leg or "horseshoe" style denim is an interesting variation of the typical denim shape. Horseshoe-style jeans have been trending for a while now, and I wanted to share some tips on how to style this unique shape. At first glance, this shape can be intimidating, but if it appeals to you, read on for some ways to integrate it into your wardrobe and get the most wear out of this trend.

Casual

The first few ideas that come to mind with this pants style are a cool and casual weekend or out-and-about daytime look. The shape of this leg barrels outward, creating a slight balloon effect, definitely on the 'trendy' side of the fashion spectrum. If you're into this unique look, you will want to balance this exaggerated shape with clean lines and simple styling. Opt for a close-fitting top like a crew neck tee or sweater; a bodysuit is a great option for its sleek fit. You can even wear a button-down, but be sure to balance the volume of your look and not have the shirt be too oversized. Low-profile sneakers and pointed-toe or ballet flats also complement this style in a casual environment. If you're wearing an embellished shoe, keep your top as simple as possible with these pants. I also recommend hemming these jeans to hit the ankle bone for a clean finish.

Elevated

For a more elevated, high-fashion look, keep the bodysuit and add a cropped trench, motorcycle jacket, or blazer on top. Adding a third piece will add dimension to the look, but again, be careful not to add too many shapes or volumes. A classic cropped moto jacket or beige trench coat would look chic over a camisole or bodysuit with a statement belt and heels or sleek flats. A beautiful silk blouse in a rich color will soften the exaggerated statement of a barrel-shaped leg, or I love a strong shoulder on a fitted long-sleeve sweater, but remember to balance the volume; think of a subtle shoulder pad and not an oversized puffed shoulder.
